Imphal, May 27 2015 :
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) is all set to observe the 26th Students' Emancipation Day 2015 on May 28, Thursday.
An AMSU statement released in connection with the event informed that floral tribute will be paid at the memorial site of students at the Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School campus, Bishnupur as part of the observance.
A public meeting will also be held at the school hall to mark the occasion.
It appealed to all to attend the function with a resolve to help save life of students and safeguard their rights, seeking help from everyone to make the event a grand success.
The union recounted the event of September 30, 1973 wherein Haobijam Ibohal was mercilessly shot to death by police.
Haobijam Ibohal, a student of Moirang College, was participating in a strike demanding the Government to address the problem of shortages in Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School then.
It further recalled that even after the killing of student Ibohal the Manipur Government failed to fulfill the demands and so on May 26, 1979 the students of the institute took up the issue and staged a hunger strike.
Five students who were taking part in the agitation were arrested by Moirang Police, AMSU remembered, adding that the students were then put into the police lockup.
Shots were fired injuring some students.
In the shooting incident Urikhinbam Khelen and Kumam Sharat were critically wounded and later succumbed, the statement said.
It said that since the incident AMSU has been observing the Students' Emancipation Day to pay homage to the martyred students.
AMSU, on the other hand, expressed displeasure over the alleged muddling up of the education system in the State by men in politics who are attempting to pound on the students who are future pillars of the society.
The union also accused the State Government of neglecting the student community by deeply concentrating on electoral politics.
