Imphal, May 27 2015 :
In an order issued on Wednesday Th Lokeswor, the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly disqualified three MLAs.
They are Khumukcham Joykishan of the Thangmeiband constituency, Thongam Biswajit of the Thongju constituency and Oinam Lukhoi of the Wangoi constituency.
The case against another MLA Maibam Kunjo was closed as he expired during the pendency of the case.
The four MLAs were among the seven who were elected in 2012 in the All India Trinamool Congress tickets.
According to a complaint lodged by Thounaojam Shyamkumar, president of the AITC, Manipur some party MLAs had formed the Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress and this was formally announced on May 20, 2014 by Joykishan.
Later he clarified that this new political party is not a unit of the AITC.
There followed some expulsions from the AITC.
However in his order the Speaker said that these three MLAs had violated the provisions of 2(1)(a) of the Tenth Schedule of the constitution to be read with Article 19(2).As these three MLAs are disqualified their respective constituencies are vacant.
At least one former MLA Joykishan has announced that he will not appeal against the rulings of the speaker.
Instead he will prepare to contest in the by polls in his constituency.
Indications are that the two others may also take a similar stand.
