Rationalisation of teachers' posting from July: Education Minister

Education Minister Thounaojam Basanta Ku mar has announced that rationalisation of posting for government teachers will commence from July onwards in addition to addressing the issue of shortage of teachers.
He was speaking as chief guest during the launch of a music album, titled Let's Talk About It' produced as part of the third phase of The Birds and Bees Talk programme for adolescents being taken up by Plan India in six north eastern states including Manipur, at the multipurpose auditorium of MSFDS, Palace Compound here on Tuesday.
The launch function was also attended by Plan India executive director Mohammad Asif; External Affairs and Partnership, Reckitt South Asia in-charge Ravi Bhatnagar, and Education (S) department director L Nandakumar as presidium members.
On the issue of shortage of teachers, minister Basanta observed that there are government schools with many students but low teacher count, and schools with low student count but many teachers.
To resolve this problem, postings of teachers will be rationalised starting from July onwards, keeping away any form of political compulsion and other types of pressure.
Although around 8000 teachers have retired till date, the vacancies left behind have not yet been filled.
Thus, efforts will be made to resolve majority of the issue of shortage of teachers faced in govern ment schools by next year, he added.
Pointing out that education is very important for human growth, Basanta Kumar said that a good student must first be a good person.
Being literate is significantly different from being educated.
A literate means one is able to read and write but an educated means to be knowledgeable.
Students must, therefore, strive to become educated.
Praising CM Biren as a dynamic leader, the minister said that various initiatives have been taken up to im prove the state's education sector, including inviting suggestions from Manipuri diasporas in this regard.
Although Manipuris are a talented bunch, we seem to lack discipline and consistency.
There is also notable decline in propriety matters and forgetting our duties, the minister said, and exhorted students to maintain discipline and consistency at all time to become successful in all aspects.
In his speech, Education (S) director L Nandakumar informed that 'The Birds and Bees Talk' project has been taken up in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur.
So far, the project has covered around 300 government and private schools in 4 districts of Manipur.
The project aims to educate and improve the life of adolescents (10-19 years of age) by imparting them knowledge on topics/themes not included in the school syllabi, which is highly laudable, he said.
