In one of the largest surrender ceremonies of recent times, 19 hardcore cadres, including 15 of the militant outfit, United Liberation Army (ULA), consisting of its Commander in Chief, Secretary and Financial Secretary, three cadres of KYKL and a S/S Sgt Major of UNLF formally surrendered to the state DGP, Y Joy Kumar and Major General CA Krishnan, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) at a function held on Jun 26 at HQ IG AR (South) complex, Mantri-pukhri.
They surrendered alongwith a large quantity of warlike stores and communication equipment to include an AK Rifle with ammunition, two Sten Carbines ,two 303 rifles, four pistols, a revolver, Hand Grenades and three wireless radio sets.
The surrender ceremony was also attended by Brigadier SK Bhanot, the Commander of the 26 Sector Assam Rifles and Commandants of 29 Assam Rifles, 31 Assam Rifles and 22 GRENADIERS.
The peaceful "Home coming " of these militants is the eventual outcome of continuous and sustained efforts by these Units under 26 Sector Assam Rifles under aegis of HQ IGAR(South) in motivating the family and relatives of these militants to enable them join the mainstream.
Speaking at the ceremony, Manipur Police Chief, Y Joy Kumar assured that the government will ensure in providing a way for their future life under existing surrender policy.
Major General CA Krishnan, IGAR(South) who also spoke on the occasion said that such a large scale surrender by young people will prove to be a beacon for other misguided youth to lay down their arms, abjor violence and return to the main stream.
