Imphal, July 14 2012:
FRIENDS Advisor, Kakchingtabam Birahari Sharma (KB Sharma), who undertook an indefinite fast over the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) System in the state, was released today.
On the other hand, the Joint Committee on ILP System has set November 18 deadline to the state government for implementation of ILP in the state.
The State Assembly yesterday passed a Private Member Resolution to extend Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 in Manipur and press the Centre for the same.
KB Sharma, who was hospitalised in JNIMS Hospitals, was released by the Imphal West Duty Magistrate on bail at around 5 pm today.
He was warmly welcomed by Convener of the Joint Committee Sapamcha Jadumani and other volunteers of the committee.
Later he broke his fast with a glass of water.
Speaking to reporters, KB Sharma said that he could not believe that he would end his fast this soon.
He had even told his wife that he might not return alive as there was faint hope of the government passing the resolution.
KB Sharma also thanked the people of the state for their cooperation and support.
When asked if he would continue fast if the government failed to implement ILP in the state, KB Sharma promptly added that he would do whatever necessary after discussing with FRIENDS and Joint Committee on ILP System.
After being released, he was taken by the volunteers of the Joint Committee to MDU Hall where he was felicitated in a public meeting.
Later the volunteers left him at his home at Thongju Super Market Mamang.
Meanwhile, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System has set November 18 as the deadline to the state government for implementation of ILP in Manipur.
If the government failed, the Joint Committee along with the people of the state will implement the system of their own from the next day onwards.
Decisions to these effects were arrived at during the public meeting held at MDU Hall, Yaiskul Police Lane, Imphal.
The meeting also resolved to organise a Convention or discussion session on extension of Bengal Easter Frontier Regulation Act 1873 in the state, along with Legal Experts, Political Parties, Academicians and Intellectuals, at the earliest.
Besides, a High Power Committee would also be instituted with representatives from Legal Experts, Political Parties, Intellectuals and CSOs to press the government to implement the Act in the state by November 18 this year.
