Imphal, July 14 2012:
All Manipur Jail Executive and Followers' Association has reacted against common jail for convicted men and women prisoners in Sajiwa Jail.
Addressing a Press Meet at Manipur Press Club, General Secretary of the Association Suresh said that keeping women prisoners from Imphal Central Jail in Sajiwa Jail is not a good step of the government.
Frequent meeting and interaction between male and female prisoners might lead to more crimes inside the jail.
Shifting female prisoners from Imphal Central Jail to Sajiwa Jail seems like a step to phase out the 100 years old historic jail of Manipur.
Even if there are rules restricting two central jails in a state, the government should change the status and reserve it for women prisoners only.
Moreover, the Imphal Central Jail could also be preserved under the Historical Monuments Act as it has its own history of more than a century, Suresh suggested.
It may be noted that Imphal Central Jail was first commissioned in 1907 .
