Imphal, June 03 2020:
State Platform of Disabled People's Organisation (SPDPO), Manipur has urged the State Government to extend immediate help and generosity towards the people with disability (PWD) who are worst hit by the Nationwide lockdown being imposed to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement, SPDPO highlighted that 90 pc of them belong to the poorest section of the society and 93 pc of them are unemployed and are dependent on the assistance provided by the attendants and caregivers for their daily survival.
PWDs should be the first section of the society to be prioritized dining such a crisis but on the contrary they are "deprived of their basic necessities and medical needs and given least access to medical care and therapy," the statement continued.
Decrying that 78 pc of the PWD population have not received any help and benefit from "Chief Ministergi Sotharabasingee Tengbang" and "Disabilities Pension Schemes", the organisation urged that The Disaster Management Act 2005, section 2 (e) and section 25 be applied with immediate effect.
As per the organisation there are approximately fifty four thousand PWD in the State.
