Tamenglong, June 02 2012:
The 48-hrs total bandh imposed by Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) in the five hill districts severely affected normal life in Tamenglong district.
The bandh also covered NH 37 and IT road and would end midnight today.
Even as vehicles stayed away from roads, all the government offices, shops and markets remained closed down at the district headquarters.
One truck carrying goods was partially damaged between Nungba and Rengpeng village by bandh volunteers.
Owing to the total bandh, tree plantation and cleanliness drive which was supposed to be carried out today too has been suspended.
The total bandh has been called to press for early completion of the work on the bridge over Barak River at Dekiuram and Katang village in Tamei Sub- Division and in protest against the negligence of authority concerned toward maintenance of the Tamenglong-Khongsang road.
ZSUM Chairman D.Stephen confirmed that although there were no untoward incidents along NH 37 and IT road, the total bandh has severely affected normal life at Nungba, Tamei and Noney as well.
He said that if the state government does not pay attention to the demands even after imposition of the bandh, the union would be compelled to even more intense agitation in June-mid.
The chairman also thanked all civil societies, organizations and general public for their full cooperation to the bandh and hoped that in future people would continue to support the cause of ZSUM.
