State braces to host BCIM car rally in Feb

Notwithstanding the present status of National Highway-37 that connects Imphal to Jiribam, the international car rally, which is being organised to promote trade and commerce between Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar (BCIM) will pass through this route as scheduled.
Of the 222 km stretch between Imphal and Jiribam, 60 kms are yet to be black topped, with some stretch yet to receive any repairing or finishing touches.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting convened by Chief Secretary DS Poonia at his office chamber today, Regional Director of the Confederation of Indian Industries, Dr Saugat Mukheijee said that the rally will go ahead as planned.

With 80 motorists scheduled to take part, the BCIM car rally will be flagged off on February 22 at Kolkata and will cover the four countries and after covering a total of 3000 kms in 12 days will wind up at Kunmin province in China.
The rally is expected to enter Manipur on February 26/27. The meeting was convened today to study the final stage of preparation for Manipur's leg of the car rally.
Convened by the Chief Secretary the meeting was attended by Saugat Mukherjee, Principal Secretary (Home) Dr Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary Commerce and Industries O Nabakishore, DGP Y Joykumar, Commissioner, Art and Culture RK Nimai and the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong district C Arthur.
To take part in the rally, ten cars from China are scheduled to arrive at Moreh on February 14, ahead of the flag off at Kolkata.
The rallyists will be treated to cultural performances along the 3000 kms stretch.
Significantly a similar car rally, the Indo-ASEAN Car rally reached Imphal on December 15 last year after covering seven member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations.
The Indian leg of the rally was held under the Look East Policy of the country.
