Imphal, January 02, 2013:
With the State Government inking a deal with the Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur, over the killing of Gonsingam Dangmei on December 30 by 10 Assam Rifles, the student body has agreed to withdraw the bandh and not to resume any agitation on the matter in future.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, State Secretary of the student body, Kadijanbou Pamei said that the decision to call off the indefinite blockade on National Highway-37 against the killing was taken after the Government agreed to initiate a Magisterial Inquiry into the incident.
The agreement was arrived at during a meeting with the State Government in which the MLA of Tamei Assembly Constituency Kikhombou Newmai was present.
The terms of the agreement include instituting a Magisterial Inquiry headed by the Deputy Commissioner/District Magistrate into the alleged killing of Gongsingam Dangmei on December 30 and to submit a report within a month.
Based on the report of the inquiry, the State Government will take up necessary actions against the persons involved in the killing, under the provisions of the law of the land.
Necessary compensation to be paid to the family of the deceased according to the existing rules of the Government and on basis of the report.
With the Government agreeing to probe the matter, the student body has decided to take back the body and withdraw the bandh in Tamenglong district.
No agitation in connection with the case will be resumed in the future, said Pamei.
A MoU towards this end was also signed between the student body, and the State Government, represented by the Secretary to the Chief Minister, N Ashok Kumar.
Notably the ZSUM had earlier alleged that the deceased was picked up by the Assam Rifles personnel and later shot dead in a fake encounter.
The ZUF had also alleged that the deceased was picked up along with another civilian identified as Nanao Meitei and later killed.
