Chandel, July 16 2022:
The Chandel Naga Peoples Organisation (CNPO) has expressed anguish over the alleged harassment meted out to truck drivers ferrying essential goods at Japhou Bazaar by Chandel Police.
A release issued by CNPO informed that in a letter addressed to the Office of CNPO dated July 14, 2022, office bearers of Sulam Business Association, Unique Business Association Chandel and All Moreh Truck Owners Associations stated that on July 11, 2022, Chandel Police seized 3 trucks ferrying wheat flour from Imphal to Chandel at Japhou Bazaar.
It also mentioned that the seized trucks along with the drivers were first taken to the police station and detained for 24 hours after which they were brought before the Customs Officers in Pallel.
"The later on examination of the case presented by the Police officer did not find any wrong doing on the part of the drivers as the wheat flour was found to have contained no illegal substance and accordingly rejected the case submitted by the Police Officer", it added.
"The police team then again took the trucks back to Chandel Police station and presented the same case to the District Magistrate who released the trucks under Sec 110 CrPc as there was no evidence of illegality", it added.
CNPO continued that the associations also expressed their anguish over the injustice, humiliation and trauma caused by the harassment meted out for ferrying essential goods.
In the letter, the associations demanded that the erring Superintendent of Police, and Additional Superintendent of Police be immediately transferred out of Chandel as they have allegedly reflected their self-vested interests.
CNPO further expressed its concern over the Modus Operandi of Chandel Police who are expected to maintain law & order, prevent illegal activities and fight against corruption in the district.
