Imphal, July 16 2022:
Citing complaints lodged by Sulam Business Association, Unique Business Association Chandel and All Moreh Truck Owners Associations expressing deep resentment over injustice, humiliation and trauma caused due to harassments meted to transporters of essential goods by the police, Chandel Naga Peoples' Organisation (CNPO) said that the three associations also demanded transfer of the superintendent of police and additional superintendent of police out of Chandel.
In a release, CNPO said that a letter was addressed to it on July 14 by the three associations stating that Chandel Police seized three trucks ferrying wheat flour from Imphal to Chandel at Japhou Bazaar on July 11.The seized trucks along with the drivers were first taken to the police station and detained for 24 hours after which they were taken to the customs office at Pallel and produced before the officers, but the case was rejected as the wheat flour contained no illegal substance.
The police team again took the trucks back to Chandel police station and presented the same case to the district magistrate who released the trucks under Sec 110 CrPC as there was no evidence of illegality.
"With the above statements received from the business communities, CNPO office is deeply disturbed and concerned about the modus operandi of the Chandel Police who are expected to be the guardian against corruption, exploitation and maintain law and order in the district", the release said, while reminding all the government functionaries and the public that, corruption and anti-people activities will be detrimental to development of the district.
