The Manipur Human Rights Commission member, Ng Nongyai, who went on an inspection spree at JN Hospital, Imphal was greeted with indecent demeanour today.
The inspection team led by MHRC member Ng Nongyai comprised Director of Human Rights Law Network, Meihoubam Rakesh, and staffs of MHRC, escorted by a team of Imphal East police led by OC RK Khomdonsana.
Heated arguments between a doctor on duty and the MHRC member ensued when a cardiologist, Rajendro Thangjam answered with disregard to some questions asked by Ng Nongyai pertaining to their inspection after inspecting the patients in the general medicine ward of the hospital.
The situation compelled MHRC member, Ng Nongyai to retort: "I am the member of Manipur Human Rights Commission.
What discipline is this, why are you sitting still when your superior is coming?" Saying this he added: "Stand up".
Pat the reply from the doctor came: "How do I recognise you?" .
Saying that the inspection was conducted with knowledge of the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, the MHRC member told the doctor plainly that he was coming to inspect the hospital and the patients.
He also reprimanded the doctor and advised him not to behave like that in future.
Later, Ng Nongyai urged the Director of JNIMS, Ahanthem Dwijamani to initiate action against the doctor.
Meanwhile, the inspecting team found that the hospital lacks drinking water facility, and the way of disposal of bio-medical waste and general wastes is not satisfactory.
No auto cleft for transformation of bio medical waste like gloves, needles and syringes to general wastes has been installed in the hospital.
The team has also found that the location of the ART centre is not suitable for maintenance of confidentiality.
The MHRC member has also said that recommendation for fulfilling the needs and lacks of the hospital will be forwarded to the government and urge the government to fulfill them.
The MHRC team could not inspect the Sajiwa Jail today as no outsiders are allowed to enter the premises today.
