Imphal, July 09 2009:
Three armed persons last night demolished and damaged some newly constructed buildings as the barrack for the personnel of Village Defence Force (VDF) at Sanjenbam Khullen under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district.
The three armed persons used two JCBs in demolishing and destroying the barrack including the kitchen and office buildings around 9.30 pm yesterday.
Construction of the buildingstwo barracks, one office, kitchen and bath rooms attached toilet had started on March 3 last.
The construction of the VDF post was done under the supervision of the Manipur Police Housing Corporation at a cost of about Rs 50 lakh.
Laborers who worked in the construction of the post told this newspaper today that three armed persons came there along with an excavator around 9.30 pm yesterday.
Then the armed persons called the driver of another JCB parked on the campus and ordered both the drivers of the two JCBs to demolish all the buildings completely, the laborers informed.
They were reportedly told that "No enemy post can exist in our way".
The armed persons also reportedly threatened the laborers to go back and not to work there any longer.
Following the threat of the armed UGs, the drivers of the two JCBs started tearing down the buildings.
As soon as they started pulling down the buildings, the three armed UGs left the place after telling the drivers to raze down the entire buildings.
After the UGs had left the place, the drivers of the two JCBs stopped pulling down the buildings and drove away from there.
Now the laborers have expressed their fear of working further there and said that unless and until a settlement is brought about, they will not be able to work further.
On getting report of the incident, a team of Imphal East district police rushed to Sanjenbam Khullen and conducted a search operation.
However, no report of arrest of the UGs has been received so far.
Police are trying to find out who the drivers of the two JCBs are and whom the two excavators belong to.
Lamlai police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to track down the two drivers for interrogation.
It may be recalled here that some unknown persons used two bulldozers to demolish and damag the newly constructed buildings meant for Andro Police Station on the night of June 12 last.
