Imphal, July 28 2015:
300 speakers from 120 countries from around the world were part of the International Youth NGOs Summit (IYONS) 2015, during July 24-26 in Chennai taking the meaning of leadership among the youth to a different plane altogether.
Brushing shoulders with change makers from different countries was activist from the State, Urmila Chanam, who addressed the huge audience there, according to a release.
|
'What is this belief that in the name of culture you, you and you close your eyes to this injustice and let this tradition of shame and untouchability carry on? ', Urmila spoke on the injustice of societal norms and taboos around menstruation that restrict a girl and a woman from realizing her aspirations and lead a happy life.
Urmila Chanam, a global campaigner on menstrual hygiene is a crusader who travels to remote villages in India and abroad to train women on menstrual hygiene and help them move from 'shame' to 'pride' and view periods as a life giving phenomenon and not something to be ashamed of.
