RIMS celebrates 42nd anniv amid MCP's strike

Imphal, September 14 2013 : Amidst the state-wide 12-hour bandh call given by armed outfit Maoist Communist Party (MCP) in protest against the alleged lack of care of the institute in health services, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) today celebrated its 42nd anniversary.

Lok Sabha MP T Meinya and RIMS Director S Sekharjit were Chief Guest and Functional President respectively of the celebration held at the Jubilee Hall of the institute.

MLA L Nandakumar and Prof Ibopishak of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences were also present on the occasion as Guests of Honour.

Delivering the Presidential address, Sekharjit recalled that RIMS was first established in 1972 with the name of Regional Medical College under the North Eastern Council.

He said that the institute has so far produced 1, 057 Post Graduates (PGs), 2, 538 Bachelor of Medicines and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and three Masters of Chirurgical (MChs).

"We are putting efforts to bring more development of the institute that has over 1, 800 employees," he said adding that now the institute also has a Dental College that was opened on August 28 last.

Lok Sabha MP Dr Meinya underscored the need for further improvement of the institute and get ready for joining the global competition, and fervently appealed to the underground groups not to make any kind of trouble in the hospital.

He said, "We need to work hard in today's highly competitive world especially in the field of education.

We need to imitate the Chinese work culture" .

everal good medical students were honoured awards on the occasion.

Two journals including RIMS Newsletter and Remedy were also released during the function.

A cultural programme was also held to mark the day.

Meanwhile, on account of the MCP sponsored general strike, normal life in the state remained affected today.

Streets in the state capital city Imphal wore a deserted look with Kwhairamband bazaar remaining shut down for the day.

Traffic was totally out of sight in the capital.

Both the inter-state and inter-district bus services also stayed off the roads due to the strike.

The MCP imposed the strike bandh from 5 am to 5 am today.
