Paralysis in stroke patient cured

Imphal, February 10 2019: Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in India.

Stroke contributes 7.1% of total death in India.

Stroke often causes paralysis of one side of the body (Hemiplegia) and difficulty or inability to speak (Aphasia).

However, paralysis following stroke is now curable if the patient undergoes pinhole Interventional Radiology treatment within 6 hours of the onset of stroke.

One such lady patient from Thoubal came to Shija Emergency & Trauma Centre with paralysis affecting one side of the body.

She could not move her hand and leg.

She was unable to speak, stand or walk.

Her MRI brain revealed acute stroke (blocking of artery inside the brain due to blood clots).

She was immediately rushed to the DSA Cathlab room where she underwent an emergency pinhole Interventional Radiology treatment procedure known as Mechanical Thrombectomy.

The blood clot from inside the brain was successfully removed non surgically or without opening the skull and thus normal blood supply was restored inside the brain.

She recovered from paralysis and could move her hand and leg by the next day.

Also, she was able to speak after two days.

At the time of discharge from the hospital, she was able to walk by herself.

The said pinhole Interventional Radiology treatment procedure which took 30 minutes was performed by Dr Thangjam Gautam Singh, Consultant Neuro Interventional Radiologist, Shija Hospitals.

He is credited to have performed Manipur's first Mechanical Thrombectomy for stroke in June 2018 and till date he has saved the precious lives of 7 patients suffering from acute stroke through this highly advanced non surgical treatment.

Few signs of stroke are sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or lack of communication.

According to Dr Thangjam Gautam Singh, the patient with any of the above signs should immediately be rushed to a stroke ready hospital where Mechanical Thrombectomy facility is available.
