NIT sees light of day, session debuts

Along with commencement of the first academic session of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Manipur from today, the scope for studying engineering courses in the State has been thrown wide open.
The first session of NIT began from its temporary campus located within the Government Polytechnic at Takyelpat with the approval of the Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The Government of Manipur had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Human Resources Development in this regard in March this year.
Subsequently, NIT, Manipur has also been registered under the Manipur Society Registration Act.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh inaugurated the first session as chief guest during a function presided by Education Minister L Jayantakumar today morning.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the academic and the hostel of the Institute at the occasion.
Of the 10 NITs that are to be newly set up following a recommendation of Union Cabinet, six NITs have been allotted to North Eastern States including one in Manipur which began its session from today.
Initially, the institute would be offering courses in three streams namely Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Though the total number of intake in each of these three courses are 30 students, in all 61 students including 20 from outside Manipur have been admitted in the first session.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh observed that it was a red letter day for Manipur.
Though the first session of NIT has begun from the temporary campus, the Government has already acquired 313 acres of land for constructing its building at its permanent location at Langol and a sum of Rs 30 crores has been set aside for the purpose.
Maintaining that the institute may become a deemed university one day, the Chief Minister appealed to the people for support in making it an institute of National/International standard.
The Chief Minister further observed that the institute where students from outside Manipur are also studying is like a mini-India.
No organisation should disturb the educational institutes which are like temple.
In his presidential address, Education Minister L Jayantakumar informed that new courses like management and applied sciences would be introduced in the institute in due course of time.
Over and above the 313 acres of land that have been acquired at Langol for developing a permanent campus of the institute, plans are also afoot for acquiring another 200 acres of land for expansion, the Minister said.
MLA Radhabinod Koijam, Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board Bijoy Koijam, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University C Amuba and Director of NIT Manipur Prof PK Bose were also present during the function as guests of honour.
