Angry over the custodial death of a young man, women folk of Moirang stormed the Moirang police station in Bishnupur district on Thursday.
During the tussle, the police used tear-gas shells to disperse the furious mob.
Reports said that at around 11 pm on Wednesday, a combined team of 12th Madras Regiment and Bishnupur police commandos picked up one Naorem Modhu Singh, 26 years old from his house at Khoijumantabi in Bishnupur district.
This morning, the family members of Modhu Singh got an information that the the arrested man had expired.
On hearing the news, locals stormed into the police station and a tussle with the poilce ensued.
Later in the day, villagers, packed in two buses, went to the chief minister and submitted a lengthy memorandum in connection with the custodial death of Naorem Modhu Singh.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased said that the security forces entered their house late last night and asked Modhu Singh to take out a gun which he was hiding or else they would shoot him.
At this the mother of Modhu Singh intervened and asked the security personnel to shoot all the family members first.
In the fury, the security forces picked up Modhu Singh and left after locking the house from outside.
Modhu Singh's father broke open one of the windows and alarmed the villagers minutes after his son was whisked away by the men in uniform.
