Imphal, July 08 2021:
The All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) has deeply condoled the demise of Rev.Fr.Stan Swami SJ, a Catholic Priest (84) who passed away on July 5 while being incarcerated.
Joining the rest of the world in mourning the demise of Stan Swami AMCO said he was a human rights activist, social worker and a champion of tribal rights who spent most of his life working for the Adivasis, Dalits and backward people in Jharkhand.
It is unfortunate that his death happened in the custody of the State, while being subjected to denial of basic human rights, said AMCO.
To know that he was arrested and imprisoned on alleged suspect evidences, denied of compassionate treatment appropriate to health and age, etc.
have left the citizens of this country with a depressing sense that even the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India under Article 21, can blatantly be denied to its citizens, added AMCO.
AMCO also unequivocally condemned the negligent and inhuman treatment meted out to Stan Swami, by denial of as little a thing as a sipper straw, and denial of bail on medical grounds, etc.
and prayed that the laws and justice systems are more humane.
May no one in the present or in the future become victims of punitive treatment and State apathy, it added.
