Contract teachers demand

Imphal, April 20 2011: All Manipur Hill Districts Contract Basis Teachers' Association has demanded the State Government to pay special attention to the 1186 contract teachers, whose contract have not been extended, in the move being made for recruitment of teachers under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

With hill districts of the State facing the problem of shortage of teachers for a long time, All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur had launched a series of agitation demanding appointment of adequate teachers.

Consequently, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had been signed between ATSUM and Government of Manipur on March 31, 2006 .

Based on this MoU, 1186 teachers have been appointed on contract basis for posting in the hill districts.

These contract teachers have been given service extension for five times with the last extension for four months in September, 2008.Since then, there has been no further service extension.

Yet, in consideration of shortage of teachers in the hill districts, these contract teachers are still being engaged even though they are not getting any remuneration.

A joint meeting of the representatives of Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs, Manipur; All India Students' Federation, Manipur; Kuki Students' Organisation and All Manipur Hill Districts Contract Basis Teachers' Association was held at Manipur Press Club here today to discuss the issue.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, president of All Manipur Hill Districts Contract Basis Teachers' Association Th Haopu Khongsai observed that the Govt should not remain quiet over the issue of contract teachers but pay special attention to them in the ongoing process for recruitment of 1300 primary teachers under SSA and another 536 graduate teachers under RMSA.

He also appealed for extention of the service of the contract teachers at the earliest.
