CM asks police to be more understanding to people

The role of the civil police force is most important in maintaining peace and order, said Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today, addressing the passing out parade of the 46th batch of police constables held at Manipur Police Training College, Pangei.
Civil police require to develop a friendly, conducive and more understanding attitude towards the common man the CM said asserting that the role of police is very different from that of Central para military forces, particularly in the state of Manipur, particularly so, because the police force has been created for local needs and that they operate within the society.
"Police modernization is required not only in terms of better infrastructure, equipment and arms but it is also required in modernising the attitude and the approach of the police system.
It needs to be more humane and respectful of the citizen's liberty and values," he said.
He added that the public should feel safe when they interact with the police.
It is unfortunate that sometimes some policemen are found indulging in dubious and unlawful activities like extortion.
The Police Department should take stern and exemplary actions against such personnel to protect the faith and trust of the common man in the police.
The CM said that the state government has been taking up several steps to improve the infrastructure in police stations in the state under the police modernization programme.
Modern equipment, means of transport and arms are being provided to the state police.
Non-functional police stations are being revived in far flung areas of the state apart from strengthening the police force by new recruitments.
To assist the police force, the concept of VDF (Village Defense Force) has been implemented, Ibobi added.
The Chief Minister also commented and praised the civil police for its hard work and dedication in the very challenging task of maintaining law and order in the state.
Altogether 1118 trainees of the 46th batch, who successfully completed the training course, participated in the passing out parade today.
DGP Y Joykumar, Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Th Lokeshwor, ministers, MLAs and senior police officers also attended the function.
