Imphal, April 20 2011:
UNLF chairman RK Meghen has stated that proposal of UNLF for holding plebiscite to resolve the Manipur-India conflict is not an objective but only a means for achieving the objective of empowering the people.
Talking to media on the sideline of being produced in the special court of NIA at Guwahati today, Meghen said that the ongoing campaign for holding plebiscite being witnessed in Manipur including one of the hill districts is encouraging and such democratic process of public discussion on the issue is required.
Reacting to a media report on the opinion expressed in a seminar that the proposal for holding plebiscite is rather hasty and peace should be restored first, Meghen observed that it sounds ambiguous for restoration of peace would entail resolving of the conflict and at that time, there would be no need for plebiscite.
The proposal is not for holding plebiscite within the next couple of days.
What is more important is to make the people realise their fundamental rights and opt for a non-violent democratic movement, Meghen said, while appealing to the experts/resource persons to enlighten the people on this point.
