Disposal of plastic wastes: a serious problem in Imphal

Even as there has been no let up to the use of harmful recycle plastics brought in from outside Manipur, the challenges posed on the health of the people and the environment has been further compounded through steady inflow of sub-standard plastic products from Myanmar.
According to an official of the Manipur Pollution Control Board, as of now the Government machineries have not been able to stop use of harmful recycle plastics brought in from outside Manipur.
The official explained that among the recycle plastics which are commonly in use, the black ones are even more harmful not only to the environment but also to the health of the people.
Disposal of plastic wastes has been serious problem in Imphal city.
But the situation has been compounded further through steady inflow of sub-standard recycle plastics from Myanmar which are thinner than 40 micron, the official said, and added that the District Magistrates and the Police have not been able to stop the inflow of these harmful products successfully.
The official disclosed that the Pollution Control Board has been conducting inspection periodically in the eight registered plastic manufactuers operating in in Manipur for giving the required consent.
These manufactering units have also been given instruction for proper lebelling and displaying the thinkness and weight of their respective products.
On the other hand, the Pollution Control Board has reportedly made necessary preparation for issuing a notification in connection with implementation of Plastic Wastes Management and Handling Rules, 2011 .
