Imphal, August 22 2026:
The Manipur Drivers' Association has urged the State Government to intervene and ensure swift repair and reconstruction of National Highway-37 and NH-2 .
At a press meet held at the association's Kwakeithel office today, its general Sanjay Kshetrimayum said that the conditions of the highways, especially the Imphal-Jiribam road, require immediate attention.
While the Government had earlier asserted that it would make the Imphal-Jiribam road worthy for aeroplanes to land, it remains the most neglected and dilapidated highway, Sanjay said.
The condition of NH-37 has deteriorated to such a level that vehicles are now taking a week to traverse the merely 220 kilometres, he said.
The condition of the highway has deteriorated even more during the rainy season.
With no proper drainage system, the road is filled with sludge-filled potholes, the size of craters, Sanjay said.
The reason for the dilapidated condition of the highways of Manipur are simple.
It is failure to maintain quality in construction, and lack of proper and timely maintenance, Sanjay asserted.
The State Government must, without fail, look into the conditions of the Manipur highways and ponder why they are in such a poor state when highways in other States remain in good and pristine conditions throughout the year, Sanjay said.
Even though the highways are under the management of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the State Government must intervene and ensure that the NHIDCL is sincere in its execution of the work on the highways in Manipur, Sanjay said.
The State Government must inspect, monitor and ensure that the highways which are the lifelines of the State are reconstructed, and maintained properly meeting all the required standards, he added.
