Thoubal, December 26 2013:
Observing that there is no quality control in the construction work of Wangjing Kodompokpi Sports Complex, the only modern sports complex of Thoubal district, the All Wangjing Development Organisation (AWDO) which is an apex body of 10 different clubs of Wangjing has ceased the same construction work.
AWDO volunteers and some media persons today visited the work site and made a field assessment of what are being constructed there.
Lack of quality control was visible at different portions.
The eastern gallery was swaying when walked upon.
It also broke apart when kicked.
The steel frame used in constructing the gallery was of 10 mm diameter even though it should be either 16 mm or 20 mm according to guidelines.
The gap between each steel bar was too wide at 8 inch each.
Bricks used in constructing the western gallery as well two youth hostels were of third grade and no plastering was done.
They made do for plaster with Gulla Chaibi.
Today's stunning discovery has belied all the hopes of Wangjing people for grooming excellent sports persons who have already sacrificed their homestead plots as well as local play grounds for a modern sports complex, said one of the volunteers.
Sports Department should return the land taken over by the Government if the department is incapable of building the sports complex properly, said L Inaocha, general secretary of Multipurpose Youth Development Organisation, Wangjing Sorokhaibam Leikai which is a constituent member of AWDO.
SK Constructions which is constructing the sports complex had earlier quarrelled with the local people for using bricks of lowest quality.
It is a matter of serious concern that the youth hostels cannot be completed till date and there is total absence of quality control even though construction of the hostels began way back when Th Chaoba was the Union Minister of State for Sports.
He sought immediate attention of the authorities concerned towards the casual and slack nature of building the sports complex.
