Imphal, February 04 2022:
The Tribal Upliftment Centre, (TUC), Ukhrul, Manipur has appealed to all citizens of the State for proper usage of traditional attires belonging to different communities, stating that traditional attires of each community identifies the community and has great historical significance.
In a statement, TUC shared that Tangkhul attires are generally classified for males and females and all traditional items have strong relation with the rich cultural heritage.
TUC observed that on January 4, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the Tangkhul 'Haora Kachon' on his visit to Imphal but the shawl was not in its original form.
Further, the statement added that an educated lady MLA in the ensuing State Assembly election was also seen in a public function held recently in Imphal wearing a 'Haora Kachon', which is traditionally used by men.
Citing these instances, TUC has appealed to people across the State to treat traditional attire of any community with regard and use them in the proper way.
All designs/patterns of traditional items have certain valuable meaning/beliefs and should not be misrepresented for one's own benefits without proper understanding and consultation with the community concerned, TUC shared.
