Imphal, August 10 2011:
A public hearing of Anal people held at Chandel headquarters decided to oppose the construction of Chakpi Multi Purpose Project.
The public hearing was organised by Anal Naga Taangpi (ANTA), the apex body of the Anals, said a press release.
It was attended by 86 village chiefs, public leaders, NGOs, educationists, youth leaders and women leaders.
The gathering observed that the negative implications override the benefits of the project.
The project would bring total breakdown of Anal economy as it is based on the forest and forest products.
It further observed that loss in socio economy and natural resources, displacement of indigenous people would lead to loss of Anal race.
The project would also submerge the monolith of Anal legendary hero Thumkhel.
The public hearing also pointed out that the proposed project area lies at the high seismic zone.
As the Chakpi river is a part of Himalayan hot spot with rich biodiversity, the construction of dam may lead to ecological disturbance.
The press release further warned that Anal people may launch any form of agitation if the project is not stopped.
