Police today resorted to firing smoke bombs and tear gas shells to disperse strike supporters at Monglenjang near Gwaltabi as large numbers of women strike supporters today tried to block the goods trucks being escorted to Imphal through Jessami Road in the wake of the SHDDC imposed indefinite general strike on the two National Highways.
Meanwhile, 341 goods trucks left Imphal for Jiribam under heavy security escort to ferry in essential commodities in the state.
The Gwaltabi incident occurred today around 10.30 am when large numbers of women strike supporters came from Monglenjang towards Gwaltabi to block the road.
However police teams led by Imphal East DSP, Manihar, Commando OC, John, Lamlai PS OC, Dhananjoy and OC Sekta Commandos, Joy who were already posted there, stopped them on their way.

Police were resorted to firing smoke bombs and tear gas shells and successfully controlled the mob.
In the process seven women got injured.
Earlier in the morning around 7 am, 11 Tata Wingers, nine Tata Sumos, two buses, three trucks, two 407 mini trucks, one Bolero, one Maruti van and one Maruti Gypsy reached Imphal with heavy security escort along the Ukhrul-Jessami Road without incidents at Gwaltabi area.
Taking the situation seriously, OCs of Litan and Lamlai Police Stations today stopped movement of vehicles along the road after 5 pm in order to avoid possible interference from strike supporters.
In another incident, strike supporters today evening burned a potato laden truck near Thawai Tangkhul village in Gwaltabi area.
Strike supporters attacked the truck with petrol bombs.
Later they axed the oil tank and burnt the truck.
Meanwhile, 341 vehicles including 319 goods trucks, four Tata Sumos, 16 oil tankers and two buses left Imphal for Jiribam under tight security escort of commandos, Manipur Rifles and IRBs with a ROP of the CRPF.
Earlier, a landslide at Beijang area blocked the highway in the morning.
However a team of Transports & Drivers' Council led by its president H Ranjit along with JCB dodgers cleared the way to give the vehicles safe passage to Jiribam.
As the agitations over the demand for Sadar Hills district continued for the tenth day today, seven protestors got injured along the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
Meanwhile, 16 villages in Kangchup area held sit-in protests demanding that the government declare Sadar Hills as a full-fledged district.
Schools students in uniform also took part in the Kangchup area protest.
