MAHUD Minister launches bio-toilets

Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD) Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar inaugurated bio-toilets along the Kanglapat today.
Speaking at the inaugural function which was held opposite to the Imphal Municipal Corporation, Th Shyamkumar said that the toilets, which are the first of its kind in Manipur, have been constructed in public interest who visit the place for the Imphal Evening and the Kangla Fort.
He added nine such environment-friendly toilets have been installed at three different places along the Kanglapat.
The MAHUD minister informed that the public convenience has been built to overcome the discomfort of the visitors to the Imphal Evening and the Kangla Fort after the MAHUD and IMC consulted the Chief Minister.
Conveying that the bio-toilets are free of stench and will not make the Kangla moat unclean, Th Shyamkumar said there are plans to built more of these toilets in other towns in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, MAHUD Director N Gitkumar said these environment-friendly toilets are a product of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Indian military's premier research and development organisation.
He maintained that the cost of one bio-toilet is Rs 79000, and each septic tank has a volume of 700 litre with a formulation to culture bacteria and the system has a 200-litre overhead tank to provide water for flushing and the taps.
N Gitkumar further mentioned that the formulation in the septic tank will be added after the first week and it will be continued monthly.
The cost of each bio-toilet include that of the formulation for a year, he said.
