JNIMS conducts kidney transplant, elates CM

Imphal, June 26 2022: Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) has created history in the held of kidney transplant by becoming the first government run health facility in the state and the second in the northeast to conduct kidney transplant successfully.

Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren has announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to the team of doctors, nurses and other staff of JNIMS, who were involved in the successful conduct of kidney transplant surgeries.

He made the announcement while briefing the media at JNIMS on Sunday after personally meeting the patients.

The CM said that three operations for kidney transplant were successfully conducted on three patients namely Takhellambam Bikramjit (37) of Wangoo Tera, Kakching; Kimsary (41) of Tuisonjang village, Churachandpur; and Hanso Wungleng (32) of Winitang, UkhruL The trio had been enduring their conditions as they could not afford kidney transplant surgery in hospitals outside the state, he said, and expressed satisfaction that the kidney transplants were conducted under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).

The patients didn't bear any expenses for the operations and medicines required, he said.

The CM appealed to the people of the state to take benefits of various government schemes including PMJAY and CMHT.

While congratulating the doctors, nurses and other staff members, Biren termed the first successful conduct of kidney transplant as a huge achievement of the state.

Considering the financial hardship faced by the people requiring kidney transplant, the state government made certain efforts on mission mode to upgrade infrastructure and service of JNIMS and the efforts paid off today, he contended.

The kidney transplant surgeries were conducted by a team of JNIMS comprising professor K Sholay (urologist), professor Rajesh (nephrologist), professor S Thoibahenba (anesthesiologist), professor H Ibemhal (anesthesiologist), associate professor Dr N Rakesh (anesthesiologist), assistant professor (honorary basis) Dr Vijayandra S Kanwar, nurses, technical staff and other support staff along with support from Mohan Foundation, Chennai.

The foundation's team Dr Nagarajan P (urologist) and Dr Sunil Shroff (urologist) was also part of the team which conducted the surgeries.

Mention may be made here that this is the first kidney transplant operation done in a government hospital in Manipur and also the second in Northeast after Gauhati Medical College, Assam.

Chief secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar, health services director Dr K Rajo, and JNIMS director Laishram Deben were also present during the press briefing.
