Movement against drugs should intensify : Dr Rajo

Health Director Dr K Rajo has stressed on the need to intensify the people's movement against drug abuse and save the State from being overwhelmed by the drug menace.
He also said that the State will sink as a whole if the prevalence and trend of drug misuse remain as it is.
Addressing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Lamphelpat today, Dr Rajo continued that drug traders have been ruining the lives of men, women and children alike since the past many years without any thought for the wellbeing of the masses.
The programme was organised by Mental Health Programme, National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services, Manipur under the theme "Addressing drug challenges on health and humanitarian crisis" .

Drug abuse and tobacco consumption also cause infertility, the Health Director said.
The Health Director further stated that the Health Directorate has sent a proposal to establish a Mental Hospital at Salam to the NAC again.
Saying that the number of drug abusers have been increasing rapidly in the State and it could create serious harm to the society if not controlled, Dr Rajo lauded the State Government for taking serious note of the issue and launching War on Drugs campaign to save the youth of the State.
Dr Rajo also stated that drug addicts should not be treated roughly but help them recover by giving proper guidance.
At the function, Head of RIMS Psychiatry Department, Dr RK Lenin spoke on "Harm reduction in ODS with special reference of methadone' .
Dr Lenin said that drug users not only harm themselves but also their families.
"There were many cases of drug overdose deaths in the State and as such considering every drug abuser as a disobedient or wicked people would be wrongful," he said and added that drug addicts should be treated routinely to help them recover from addictions.
