Imphal, October 21 2023:
A Single Bench of the High Court of Manipur granted interim relief to Meitei Leepun Chief Mayengbam Pramotchand from arrest and appearance before the Court of CJM Churachandpur.
In connection with a petition filed by Mayengbam Pramotchand for interim relief regarding a non-bailable warrant of arrest issued by the Court of CJM Chura-chandpur and its direction to the SP Churachandpur for timely execution of the order, returnable before November 9, a Single Bench of Justice Ahanthem Bimol passed an order yesterday which granted interim relief to the Meitei Leepun chief.
The non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued in connection with a case filed by Kuki Students Organization against a comment made by Pramotchand in an interview on June 6 .
Challenging the Chura-chandpur CJM's order, Pramotchand filed a petition before the High Court of Manipur against the State of Manipur, SP Churachand-pur, OC Churachandpur, OC Lamphel and IO of the case Letjapao Kipgen, Sub-Inspector of Churachandpur police station as respondents.
The Court heard at length the submission of the petitioner's counsel for passing an interim order and also the objection raised by the PP appearing for the State Government respondents.
The Court, considering the volatile situation prevailing in the State and danger to the life of the petitioner in the event of appearance before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Churachandpur, ordered that the petitioner should not be arrested or compelled to appear before the CJM Churachandpur without leave of the High Court till the next date of hearing.
The Single Bench listed the case for next hearing on December 6 .
