Imphal, October 21 2023:
Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), an apex body of Tangkhul community, has clarified that it had no involvement in the state cabinet meeting held in Ukhrul during the visit of chief minister N Biren and his declaration of brotherhood between Tangkhul and Meetei, as well as the idea of developing Ukhrul as the second capital of the state.
The organisation also distanced itself from the joint memorandum submitted by some Tangkhul Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
TNL expressed appreciation for any developmental initiatives undertaken by the state government in the district.
However, it underscored that such actions are part of the government's mandated duties and not exceptional favours extended to the community.
Reacting against the public declaration by the Chief Minister regarding the fraternal relationship between Tangkhul and Meetei communities, TNL emphasised that it does not recognise the authority of N Biren, whether in his capacity as the head of the state government or individually, to define the blood ties of Tangkhul tribe.
The organisation argued that such declarations held no significance for TNL.
While acknowledging the existence of historical and genealogical relationships between certain families or clans of Tangkhul community with Meetei, TNL asserted that attempting to categorise the entire Tangkhul community under this historical and genealogical definition lacks sound basis.
Moreover, TNL affirmed its deep understanding of its history and belief of the community as an integral part of 'Naga nation'.
It explicitly stated its opposition to the idea of its land becoming the summer capital, second capital, or any other capital of Manipur.
