Imphal, October 21 2023:
Manipur State Pensioners' Union (MSPU) on Saturday observed the 8th Pensioners' Day at Pensioners' Shanglen, Pishumthong and discussed various difficulties faced by pensioners.
The observance began with offering of floral tributes to the portraits of deceased pensioners.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, MSPU ex-president and retired ZEO P Nimai recalled that the state government used to give DA/DR much lower compared to what the central government provide to its employees.
As such, MSPU took out a rally on October 21, 2005 in protest, and the day being remembered till date.
He remarked that the DA/DR percentage should be raised twice a year, taking into account the price index brought on by inflation.
However, in Manipur's context, this is not fixed in time, which is highly unfortunate.
Stating that pensioners need to be aware of their rights, Nimai also stressed the need for office bearers to ensure pensioners are provided with their entitled benefits.
As it is not feasible for pensioners to fight for their individual rights, MSPU has been shouldering the responsibility of apprising the government and will continue to fight for the rights of pensioners, he added.
Presided over by MSPU president Dr M Rajendra, the observance was attended by MSPU vice president L Gunindro, MGSF senior VP L Sarat and general secretary Purujit Lairikyengbam as guests of honour.
