Imphal, September 23 2023:
While some police vehicles were damaged as a mob protesting the arrest of an individual by the NIA attacked Kwakeithel police outpost by pelting stones, many including women sustained injuries in RAF crackdown on protesters at Kakwa and Naorem Leikai.
A large number of people staged a protest demonstration near Kwakeithel police outpost at around 2 am today against the arrest of an individual from Singjamei Sorokhaibam Leikai by the NIA after he was granted bail by Court.
As the protest grew more intense, police tried to control the situation by firing tear gas shells and mock bombs.
The protesters retaliated by pelting stones toward the police outpost which resulted in damages to some police vehicles.
Police reinforcements arrived at the scene at around 3 am and the police finally succeeded in driving away the protesters after firing several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
Police also allegedly thrashed some protesters.
As similar protests erupted in Naorem Leikai and Kakwa areas, Central forces and RAF not only drove away the protesters from the main road (Imphal-Moreh highway) but also went inside lanes and by-lanes, and fired multiple rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
They also charged the protesters with shock sticks/batons, thereby inflicting injuries to seven people including two women.
Three of them were taken to hospital for treatment.
