Imphal, March 14 2024:
Registering a strong protest against the arrest of three members of the Pambei-led UNLF, 13 organisations have called a 48 hour general strike with effect from this midnight.
The 48 hour general strike was announced by 13 organisations including Federation of Civil Societies (FOCS), Indigenous People's Organisation, Universal Mothers' Organisation, World Meetei Council, Yelhoumi Kanba Lup, Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup, Singjamei Apunba Nupi Lup and Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation.
Speaking to media persons at the office of Manipur Women's Federation at Kakwa Boroimakhong today, FOCS president Th Manihar came out strongly against the arrest of three leaders of the Pambei-led UNLF without furnishing any reason.
Notably, the Pambei-led UNLF is under a peace agreement with both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur.
It was rather unfortunate that the Chief Minister said that he had no knowledge about the arrest of the three men, said Manihar.
Saying that the Chief Minister's statement was a manoeuvre to shirk responsibility, Manihar said that the 13 organisations have decided to call a 48 hour general strike with effect from Thursday midnight.
The 13 organisations had yesterday asked the Government to ensure the release of the three men without any condition by Thursday noon.
They had also warned that strong protests would be launched if they were not released by the deadline set to free them.
If the three leaders of the Pambei-led UNLF are not released even after the general strike, the 13 organisations would launch different modes of agitation including boycotting the Lok Sabha elections, Manihar further warned.
He also sought people's support to ensure the success of the protest movements.
