CCpur, March 14 2024:
The 27th anniversary of International Day of Action for Rivers was observed on Thursday at Saihemjang village under the theme "Water for AU" .
The United Nations observes the event every year on this day.
Speaking about the programme, secretary Mary Beth Sanate informed Rural Women Upliftment Society (RWUS) decided to organise the observance in collaboration with Highland and Vision Lamka at Saihenjang village this year to raise awareness among the local population about the importance of river conservation and better resource management with local communities.
RWUS has been observing the International Day of Action for Rivers in collaboration with different stakeholders for the past five years, she further informed.
The secretary maintained that practically all of the rivers in Churachandpur district, including Tuitha, Koite and Lanva, have become polluted with growth of population and due to lack of awareness about the importance of keeping rivers clean.
Highlighting initiatives undertaken by the RWUS, she stated that every year they clean all of these rivers to demonstrate action for rivers because they are life givers and, more importantly, lifelines for people because we all use them for a variety of purposes.
During the observance, there was a consultation on how to keep the rivers clean, as well as a pledge by the gathering on the same issue.
