Centre urged to release Pambei-led UNLF trio: CM

Clarifying that the state government was not informed about the arrest of the chief of army and two other members of the Pambei-led UNLF by the NIA, chief minister N Biren Singh has informed that the central government has been urged to release the arrested UNLF members at the earliest if they are found not guilty.
Chief minister Biren disclosed about the state government's intimation to the centre while responding to queries posed by media persons on the sidelines of inauguration of State Institute of Hotel Management (SIHM) at Nongmaiching in Imphal East, on Thursday.
Referring to arrest of the three members of the Pambei-led UNLF, which had already signed peace agreement with the government of India, the chief minister conceded that reason for detention of the three members by the NIA is not clear.
Though there is unconfirmed reports that the three have been arrested in connection with a case unrelated to the state but beyond, the state government has been trying to ascertain the exact reason of their arrest since Wednesday, he clarified.
Stating that the state government had put in relentless efforts for over 2-3 years to sign the peace agreement, the chief minister said that the centre has been urged to notify the state government before making any arrest of members of groups which are signatories of peace agreement with the government.
