Thoubal, March 14 2024:
Denouncing the order issued by DCs concerned for formation of administrative committee instead of conducting Panchayat elections, people of Tentha Gram Panchayat organised a sit-in protest and locked down the Panchayat Ghar, on Thursday.
After staging the sit-in at Tentha Heibung community hall, the agitators took out a protest rally and put the Panchayat Ghar under seal and lock.
Speaking to media persons, social worker P Sanatomba pointed out that the government conducted elections during the COVID-19 pandemic amid restriction imposed on gathering and movement of public while it is preparing for the Lok Sabha election in-spite of tension and intermittent clashes in different parts of the state.
However, the state government has been delaying conduct of the long-pending Panchayat elections, which is unfortunate and condemnable, he said while cautioning in case the government continues to undermine sentiment and genuine demand of the people for reviving the grassroots level governance, then resorting to intense agitations cannot be ruled out.
The sit-in protest also resolved to launch agitations till revocation of the order for formation of administrative committees and to keep the Panchayat Ghar at Tentha under lock till revival of the Panchayati institutions.
The agitators also used placards and raised slogans demanding conduct of PR1 elections, uphold democratic principles as enshrined in the Constitution of India, etc.
