Imphal, April 21 2024:
Women vendors of Khwairamband Ima Keithel have come out strongly against the widespread violence witnessed in the State during the first phase of polling held on April 19 .
Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace convenor Laishram Mema said that all the principles and values of democracy were completely undermined and tarnished during the first phase of polling.
Speaking to media persons at Khwairamband Keithel today, Laishram Mema asked the Government to clarify whether democracy is still alive or dead in Manipur.

Saying that large groups of armed persons imposed their diktats during the polling, Mema questioned the inaction of the security forces deployed at polling stations when the armed persons were calling the shots.
She went on to ask, "Are they going to say that they did not order from the higher authority?" .
Recalling the statements made by the Government and the election authorities before the poll that all arrangements had been completed to hold the election in a free and fair manner, Mema asked the authorities concerned why they allowed the armed persons to dictate terms on the polling day.
She also decried the silence and inaction of the Government with regard to large scale proxy voting.
The Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace made repeated appeals to the authorities concerned to defer the Lok Sabha elections until the crisis besieging the State is resolved and complete normalcy is restored.
But the elections were held forcibly without giving any thought to the people's voice, she said.
As for the members of Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace, they stayed away from the elections as it was not the time to hold elections.
But the polling held on April 19 was neither free nor fair, she asserted.
Mema then questioned the silence of those groups who visited 'Heinou Makhong' repeatedly in the run up to the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in the name of discussing State issues.
She also demanded repoll at all the polling stations where the voting could not be held in free and fair manner.
