Gale leaves trail of destruction, fisherman killed

A fisherman died in Loktak Lake today in the morning after his boat capsized during a strong wind that swept through parts of Manipur.
The deceased has been identified as Khwairakpam Thoi (56), a resident of Ithing Maning Leikai under Keibul police station and the tragedy took place while he was in the lake to check his (fish) capture.
Reportedly, the boat capsized while Thoi was trying to take shelter at a safer place during the storm.
His corpse was recovered by other fishermen after the wind subsided.
Meanwhile, the Loktak Lake Fishermen's Welfare Society (LLFWS) said that the sudden wind which started at around 7.30 am lasted for about an hour and left behind a trail of destruction in the area.

The Society continued that many houses got damaged and even a vehicle was sent flying by the wind and it fell at a residential area.
It also said that the number of casualties may rise.
Saying that many fishing equipment have also been damaged, the Society added that another storm more severe than the previous one swept through again at around 11.30 am.
The Society further stated that several houses got swept away in the second round of the storm too while many people were washed away in the lake.
Continuing that properties of over 2000 fish farms of 14 localities of Ithing to Thanga Karang have been destroyed in the storm, the Society said that they are afraid to pick up their remaining fishing equipment from the lake as the storm may hit the area again.
The Society appealed to the Government to extend some sort of compensation to the fishers who suffered loss.
