Imphal, April 21 2024:
A one-day consultative meeting organised by Thawaijab Hungpung Young Students' Organisation (THYSO) at Ilongshim, Hungpung in Ukhrul district on Sunday attracted more than 500 students and youths from Hungpung area, community leaders, and Women of Hungpung Unit for Social Advancement (WHUSA) president Ency YL and her team.
Held under the theme 'Defining THYSO', the event had the participation of assistant professor of JNIMS Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Dr Soreingam Kasom-hung, and Sentinel College principal Lurstep Khapai, as speakers.
The consultative meeting commenced with a prayer led by Hungpung Baptist Church pastor PS Sword.
In his opening remarks, THYSO president Hubert Lunghar expressed his delight at the turnout, and emphasised on the importance of clarity and guidance for the youth in shaping their future through constructive dialogue.
Dr Soreingam Kasomhung, who highlighted prevalence of negative peer pressure and current trends among the youth in Hungpung and Ukhrul, underscored the critical nature of the teenage and adolescent years in establishing lifelong habits and interests, while emphasising the need for self-confidence and prudent friend selection.
Voicing grave concern over increasing number of Tangkhul youths using psychotropic drugs, with peer pressure as one of the reasons, Dr Kasomhung cautioned that presence of substantial number of unregistered drug users in the area would be detrimental to the society as such elements have the potential to commit crimes and cause financial strains.
Speaking on the occasion, principal Lurstep Khapai traced the history and evolution of THYSO since its establishment in 1957.Noting struggle of the organisation in its formative stages, he called upon the youth to engage in self-assessment and work with diligence for personal as well as society's wellbeing.
He also advocated for the preservation of the Hungpung dialect, and suggested collaboration with Tangkhul educators and elders for linguistic research.
Meanwhile, Wungchipem Mahung exhorted the youths present to embrace cultural heritage and act with responsibility and accountability.
Drawing inspiration from a famous quote by US President Kennedy, he urged the youth to take ownership of THYSO and support each other in their endeavours.
The event concluded with performances by local artistes Reitimla Khapai and Bruno Awungshi, who captivated the audience with their melodious voices and inspirational messages.
