Women vendors to guard polling station

Imphal, April 21 2024:
Day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced re-poll in 11 polling stations in the state on Monday, women vendors of Singjamei Keithel (temporary) have announced that they will guard the 5/31 National Children's School, Khongman Zone (V)-A polling station in Thongju AC on the re-poll day in order to prevent recurrence of violence and proxy voting.
The decision was arrived at during a joint meeting of women vendors of the market held on Sunday, wherein they discussed the violent activities reported in the polling station on Friday.
Informing this to the media, one of the women vendors said that they will keep vigil in the vicinity of the polling station from 8 am to 4 pm in order to ensure peaceful, free and fair conduct of the re-poll so that the voters could freely choose their candidate.
She also appealed to the people to cooperate with them.
Meanwhile, Social Workers' Congress (SWC), Khong-man and Meeyamgi Yaipha Nupi Lup condemned unidentified armed persons interfering and indulging in proxy voting at Khongman polling station 5/31 National Children School and 5/32 Khongman community hall on the first phase polling day on April 29 .
In a joint release, SWC and Nupi Lup appealed not to repeat such act in future and urged authorities concerned to take appropriate actions.
It also informed that voting continued in polling station 5/32 till late evening.
