Lamka, December 22 2010:
Hundreds of people turned up today at the condolence meeting convened jointly by Churachandpur District Students' Union, Philanthropic organisations and the women bodies over the murder of Hatkholhing Guite by unknown miscreants.
'The barbaric behaviour of the culprit and the negligence of Government to protect innocent lives have turned into a major threat to civilians, especially women and children, thereby creating an atmosphere of fear,' declared a memo that was adopted in the meeting.
Addressed to the Chief Minister, the memo further lamented that it is unfortunate that departments concerned such as the State Women Commission, Women and Child Protection, and the Social Welfare remained as silent spectators over such incidents.

'Poor performance of the State police is also pitiful,' it added.
The memo signed by JL Sawmi, president CJWO; Ginzawmsang Gangte, general secretary CDSU; Thangzamang Zou, general secretary ZYA; Zothanmawia, president HYA, CV Duhawma, president YMA; and Paozangam, general secretary KKL also said that the family and relatives of the victim, church leaders and civil society organisations are deeply hurt that the lifeless body of Hatkholhing was disposed without any formal religious rites and rituals.
Insisting the Government to take urgent and effective step to identify the culprit and award punitive action on or before 25 December, and award Rs.5 lakhs to the family as ex-gratia, the memo of the public meeting further warned that civil organisations are ready to do what they can if the Government fails to do its duty.
It also called for morgue facilities in all the hill districts so as to avoid the pain and suffering, as in this case, could be averted in future.
