Imphal, December 22 2010:
A woman, estranged by her husband for giving birth to only girls, has filed a case against her husband, charging him of extramarital sexual relations that wilfully and maliciously interfered their marriage.
The woman charged her husband of abusing her for giving birth to only females and making it a flimsy excuse for having an extramarital relationship with another woman in the same locality.
The 36-year-old woman who was married in 1995 gave birth to three daughters and she has now been driven out by her husband Heisnam Sobha (47) of Naranseina Mamang Leikai in Bishnupur district.
Sobha forced her out from his house on the night of December 2 along with her three daughters.
Police have registered a case under section 354 (assault or use of criminal form to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 498-A (Adultery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sobha had subjected her to various forms of torture and harassment both physical and mental, the victimised woman said.
She had helplessly endured torture and cruelty in silence in the hope that Sobha could be reformed.
However, to her surprise she learnt that her husband was instead having an extra marital relationship with a woman in the same locality.
Sobha had often assaulted her causing serious injuries.
The latest assault was on December 2 the very night she and her three children were thrown out from his house.
She is now staying with her parents at Lamphel Sana Keithel in Imphal.
Meanwhile, Sobha has been absconding since December 2, and he is still at large, a police officer said.
Mention may be made that womenfolk in Imphal had organised a rally on December 16 to press the government to constitute a special mechanism for effective implementation of Acts and Laws for the protection of women.
They had also demanded a reform of the Police Act.
