Congress MLA Irengbam Hemochandra, elected from Singjamei Assembly constituency is all set to be appointed to the vacant post of Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker.
Hemochandra is most likely to be elected to the post of Speaker unopposed and this would be formally announced by the Deputy Speaker in a special meeting tomorrow before commencement of the Assembly session.
In a late night development, the Congress Legislature Party convened a meeting to arrive at a consensus on election of the Speaker after Uripok AC MLA Laishram Nandakumar too filed nomination paper for the post.
It is said that inspite of Nandakumar not present at the CLP meeting, the MLA was convinced to withdraw candidacy and has responded positively.

Earlier in the day, which was the last date for submission of nomination forms, INC's I Hemochandra and L Nandakumar submitted their nomination forms to the Assembly Secretary.
voting for election of the new Speaker was supposed to be held tomorrow at 10 am in the Assembly Hall before opening the Assembly session with Deputy Speaker Th Lokeshore in the chair.
Hemochandra submitted 17 nomination papers (notice of motion) in three batches with 34 Members as proposers and seconders.
House members supporting Hemochandra included 15 Congress MLAs, four independents, three RJD MLAs, two NPP MLAs, four NCP MLAs and two CPI MLAs.
Laishram Nandakumar submitted a single nomination paper with CPI MLA Pheiroijam Parijat as proposer and Congress MLA W Brajabidhu as seconder.
Even though Congress MLA Moirangthem Hemanta also obtained nomination paper, he did not submit any nomination paper.
The Speaker's post for the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly term has been lying vacant since the demise of Speaker Sapam Budhichandra.
