Imphal, December 22 2010:
With call for self-reliance on food production, the 6th foundation day of Man League Manipur was celebrated at Manipur Press Club here today.
Dean of Central Agricultural University Prof N Iboton Singh and president of Man League Nongleima Haobam Ongbi were respectively chief guest and functional president of the event which was also attended by Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Ph Rajendra Singh and advisor of Man League Kh Borkeshore Singh as guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Iboton pointed out that irrigation facilities should be developed first for the development of agriculture and thereby increasing food production.

"If we have proper irrigation system, then agricultural activities in Manipur would be more successful," he elaborated, while stressing on the need for harvesting rain water for agricultural purposes as well.
Kh Borkeshore observed that with lack of work culture, Manipuris have been depending on import of even essential commodities from other States.
During the reign of kings, Manipuris used to produce everything they need and did not have to depend on others.
But today, the situation is just the opposite.
It is also unfortunate that Manipur still does not have an Agricultural policy of its own, the Professor lamented.
He suggested that along with or instead of inviting retired/disabled security officers for tea at the occasion of celebrating Republic Day, farmers should be invited and honoured.
Such invitation and honour would encourage them to produce more food in the State.
Instead of honouring and if we continued to look down upon the farmers, we will continue to depend on others for food.
Ph Rajendra Singh observed that many changes have taken place in Manipur over the last few decades.
Some of these changes may be for good, but disappearance of work culture is regrettable.
He also stressed on the need for sincerity between the Government officials and the farmers if we want self reliance on food.
