Moirang, February 05 2024:
A person who went to herd cattle in the upper portion of the Naranseina Maning High Canal was fired on by Kuki militants yesterday.
The incident happened at around 3 pm yesterday.
Narenseina Maning High Canal falls under Moirang police station.
Locals said an elderly person was given the permission by the Central security forces stationed there to herd cattle.
Yesterday, he had gone to the upper portion of the High Canal to herd cattle as usual.
However, Kuki militants fired some rounds of bullets from Heijanglok side, said a member of the Social Educational Voluntary Association, a local body.
When the locals raised the matter with the Sikh Regiment stationed nearby, the Central security personnel reportedly told them that the Kuki militants were "shooting at birds" .
The response of the Sikh Regiment is irresponsible and has angered the locals, said the member.
Even if the Kukis were shooting at birds, it is illegal and has caused fear psychosis among the people.
The Central Security Forces and the Government should take up appropriate measures and legal action against the armed Kukis, he said.
Accusing the Central security forces of being biased, the locals also appealed to the Government to take up appropriate actions.
Locals around the High Canal region in Bishnupur district have often come under attacks from Kuki militants since May last year.
