Imphal, February 05 2024:
In connection with the establishment of an Administrative Committee to carry out activities of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in the valley districts as per an order of the Manipur High Court, the PRIs of Kshetrigao AC have urged for appointing all PRI members as members of the Committee.
Addressing a press meet at KYVO office, Kongpal Mamang Sabal Leikai on Monday, Naoriya Zilla Par-ishad former member and Imphal East District former up-adhyaksha Kshetri Tama said that a country cannot progress without first developing its rural areas.
PRIs play an important role in delivering the welfare services launched by the government for the people, Tama added.
While the government was repeatedly urged to conduct the polls for PRI, no action has been taken up till date.
Since the election has not been conducted, the PRIs approached the Manipur High Court, requesting for their terms to be extend -ed.
As such, the Court, on April 18 last year, ordered for the terms of PRIs to be extended until the election of urban local bodies are conducted.
Unfortunately, the government is yet to give its response to the court order, she lamented.
Tama continued that on January 31, the DCs of valley districts issued an order stating that an administrative committee will be set up to carry out activities related to PRIs.
However, the order mentioned that anyone with zero knowledge of panchayat guidelines could be eligible for membership and voting rights in the Committee.
Thus, she urged the authorities concerned to comply with the court's orders and appoint all PRIs as the members of the Committee.
